Our metabolism slows as we age. A woman can gain one to two pounds a year during her adult life, that is around 40 extra pounds by the time they are 50! Being overweight affects so much more than our body – it affects how we feel physically, emotionally, and mentally. As I said, added weight can cause challenges for all areas of our body, mind, and soul but it also can put you at an elevated risk of many chronic lifestyle conditions from heart disease and diabetes to several types of cancer! For example, having a BMI (Body Mass Index) over 30 in comparison to under 25, can elevate the risk of a man developing type 2 diabetes by 7 times and a woman’s 12 times!
Our gut reaction is to listen to mainstream media and automatically reduce calories or grab that miracle pill, shake, or diet that will help you lose the weight. One thing that that unfortunately does often, is cause you to eat less than your body needs to continue functioning at your full potential. It can slow your metabolism further or bring it to a complete stop. When your metabolism slows down, unfortunately your body joins it. Your energy pit falls, and you struggle to complete daily tasks. If your metabolism is stalled or not working well – the only real answer is to give it a kick to wake up and re-set it!
I’m a big believer in not feeling deprived. I eat mindfully, I live mindfully. I know that to create lasting lifestyle change – you need to create healthy habit change. Since we connect our habitual processes to what is pleasurable in our life – you can’t expect lasting, healthy habit change if your body feels deprived. You also can’t expect to maintain those healthy habits if you connect guilty feelings or shame to anything you are putting in your body or to any activity you are doing. Everything is okay and “good” in moderation.
To give your metabolism a re-set – you need to eat three healthy meals full of metabolism boosting foods and a couple of snacks a day to keep your metabolism burning all day long. Ensuring that you feel satisfied throughout the day will decrease the chances of you craving and snacking late into the night to keep going.
It is okay to have that morning kick of caffeine with a cup of java or tea. In fact, studies show that the caffeine can boost our metabolic rate and help you along this little journey! Do Not skip meals. Do Not severely restrict calories. That does not mean go crazy with what your eating – my suggestion is that you are mindful about the type of food you are consuming as well as how you consume it, how you cook it and who you are when you are eating.
